It’s true; boys, in general, value reading less than girls. Here’s how parents can spark an interest in books.
- Consider books or magazines attractive to boys. Look for themes: trucks, boys who get into trouble, sports, animals, war, pirates, mythology, humor, action, smell, gore, bugs, etc.
- Offer only 2 or 3 choices at a time.
- Give opportunities for boys to see older males selecting materials and reading: manuals, sports pages, etc., can be motivating.
For books that boys like, see BOOKS FOR BOYS (GR. 2-7) in the Lists of Recommended Books section of this web site. For more information visit http://www.readingrockets.org/article/boys-and-books.
